In 1939 three light British warships cornered the powerful German pocket battleship, Graf Spee (Grof Spaay) in the harbor at Montevideo. Uruguay's law said she had to leave the harbor after twenty-four hours. Her master, Captain Hans Langsdorff, was misled by the British into believing there was a large British flotilla of warships waiting for him should he attempt to run for the open sea. He chose to scuttle his ship and commit suicide rather than contest with a phantom British fleet.
