THE TONGUE OF LIFE - THE TONGUE OF DEATH
Those who cannot subdue their tongue will be ruled by it. The tongue gives life or delivers death. It can be a savage and vicious master. The tongue of death is GOSSIP.
Gossip says I have no respect of justice. It breaks hearts and ruins lives. It is cunning and malicious, and gathers strength with age. The more gossip is quoted, the more it is believed. It flourishes everywhere.
Gossip’s victims are helpless to protect themselves for gossip has no face. To track it down is impossible; the harder one tries the more elusive it becomes. Gossip has no friends only allies. Once tarnished the victim’s reputation is never quite the same.
Gossip topples governments, splits churches, wrecks marriages. It ruins careers, causes night sweats, hypertension and indigestion. It spawns suspicion and generates grief. It makes innocent people cry. Even the word hisses.
There’s office gossip, shop gossip, church gossip, party gossip. It makes headlines and heartaches. Before we repeat a story let us ask ourselves, Is it true? Is it fair? Is it even necessary? If not, let us stand silent!
Columnist George Will said, “Gossip is the democratic voyeurism of the masses.” Listening to gossip is like receiving stolen property.
It is true today as it has been throughout all of human history, small minds talk about people; average minds talk about events; big minds talk about ideas.
