THE CHOICE IS OURS

Taylor Benge was a self-proclaimed agnostic… until he came under fire at a Jason Aldean concert on a balmy Sunday evening in Las Vegas. He left the concert a firm believer in God.

There are basically three ways in which we come to have a relationship with God. All three involve God breaking into our lives. The first way that causes us to let God into our heart and life is through intellectual curiosity. Something moves us to search for answers through reading, research and asking questions.

The second way we come to God is through emotionalism; we hear a stirring message or a moving tribute at, say, a funeral. Our heart is stirred, we get a bubbly feeling inside. Unfortunately, this is usually ephemeral, lasting but a short period of time. We then go back to self-medicating the pain and confusion in our life.

The dramatic example of this happened after the twin towers came down on September eleven, 2011. Following that sad tableau, churches all over the country were packed, but then, after a short season, attendance fell off to the regular faithful.

The third way we come to the Lord is when we literally have the hell scared out of us. This happened to young Benge laying on the ground at a Las Vegas concert.

I once heard two friends talking the one saying, in a rather cavalier way, “Well, you only live once!” His wise friend thoughtfully replied, “No, you die once, you live forever.” The question isn’t so much how we die, but are we ready to die?’
